About Us

The Potomac Bridle & Hiking Trails Association (PBHTA) is a nonprofit community organization dedicated to preserving and maintaining the network of equestrian and hiking trails that wind through Potomac, Maryland.

Our trails connect public lands—such as those managed by local Montgomery County Parks, the state Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and the federal C&O Canal—with historic private trails and easements that pass through local farms and neighborhoods. Together, they form a unique trail system that allows riders and hikers to experience Potomac’s landscape much as it has been enjoyed for generations.

Founded in the 1960s, PBHTA began when Potomac was still defined by large farms and a vibrant equestrian culture, with the Potomac Hunt and Kennels located on Glen Road. As development increased in the 1980s, PBHTA saw the need to keep trails open, and worked tirelessly with Montgomery County to record many of these historic trails as permanent public trails and recorded easements, helping ensure they would remain open and connected for future generations.

Today, PBHTA volunteers continue that mission by maintaining trails, clearing debris, organizing mowing, and advocating for the preservation of open space and responsible trail use. Our work helps keep trails and easements accessible across both public park systems as well as those on privately managed farms and entities, all of which together form Potomac’s unique trail network. While portions of the historic 4-mile Travilah Loop have become more complex to restore due to changes in land ownership and easement considerations, PBHTA continues to maintain the accessible sections and remains committed to preserving and protecting these important connections wherever possible.

PBHTA is more than a trail stewardship organization—it is a community of riders, hikers, and neighbors who share a love for Potomac’s trails and rural landscape. Through fun social and community gatherings and volunteer trail work, members connect with others who value the outdoors while helping care for the paths that bring us together. PBHTA also keeps members informed about local land use, trail access, and the laws, policies, and budgets that affect our open spaces, serving as a thoughtful advocate for hikers and equestrians in discussions with local, state, and federal partners. Working alongside organizations such as EPIC, Potomac Hunt, the Congressional and Seneca Polo Clubs, MORE, Montgomery Countryside Alliance, MoCo Farm Bureau, and the Izaak Walton League, we advocate for the preservation of trails and open space so they can be enjoyed for generations to come. By joining PBHTA, you help protect these historic trails while becoming part of a welcoming community dedicated to preserving the unique character of Potomac.
